Everyone enjoyed a fun and educational day at Roger Williams Park Zoo!
FIELD DAY FUN
Language ArtsDuring Reader's Workshop, BOOK CLUBS meet daily. Each group is reading a different novel. Each day they read a chapter or two and respond to the reading. Responses include identifying story elements, summarizing events, making text-to-text connections, text-to-self connections,
word wizard work, and illustrating. Upon completion, students must give an oral summary of the book, including how the problem in the story was resolved and whether they would recommend this book to their classmates or not. Some of the books that have been read include:
Bunnicula, The Girl With 500 Middle Names, The Hit Away Kid, The Legend of Red Horse Cavern, The Case of the Glow-In-the-Dark Ghost, December Secrets, and A Taste of Blackberries |
Dear Families,
This June, the students will be showing off their creativity in technology and engineering with our annual Fourth Grade Invention Convention.
It will be held on June 19th at 1:45 in the gym and all families are invited. The students have already started recognizing real-world problems, and developing ideas to solve them. All student research, work, and writing for this project will be completed in school. The only portion of the project that will need to be completed at home is the invention model. The invention model should be completed during the month of May and be ready to be brought to school in June. Sketches for student inventions will be going home at the beginning of May to help create the model. The students will need a small tri-fold for their project research and work. It is important that the tri-fold is small because it needs to fit on the tables in the gym on presentation day. Please send in Tri-folds by May 6th.
Students will also be typing their written work at school. The students will be using the school laptops as well as the computer lab to do this. We are recommending that each student bring in their own flash drive to save their work. As always, THANKS for your support!! Mrs. Vitullo

SHARING REPORTS ON THE SOUTHEAST STATES
Future Geologist at Work
The future geologists in 4-V have been studying Rocks and Minerals. We spent time learning what characteristics scientists use to classify rocks as either Igneous, Metamorphic, or Sedimentary. Also, how scientists use the 3 properties, color, hardness, and luster to identify minerals.
Special Guest
Mr. Kennedy, Sean's dad and Geologist, came in to share his wealth of knowledge about rocks, minerals, the Earth, gems, tectonic plates, and more!
Generously, he brought in a surprise for each student-a geode from Mexico! He used a rock hammer to crack each one open and reveal the crystal surprise inside.

Studying Soil
The recent warm weather allowed us to go outside and gather soil samples to study. Students looked at soil composition, soil color, and texture to determine whether the sample was clay, humus, or sand.
Junior Meteorologists Studying the Weather
During our Science Unit on Weather students created models of weather instruments, including the Barometer, Rain Guage, Anemometer, and Wind Vane. They used their instruments and recorded data for a week. They learned to read a weather map. They used their knowledge of data and symbols to create their own weather map to give a weather report to the class.
Read Across America Day~March 1Mr. Medeiros kicked off the morning by reading Oh the Places You'll Go by Dr. Suess, dressed as the Cat in the Hat. Later that morning we got together with our first grade buddies from Mrs. Hedly's class to have some fun. Our final activity for the day was making Oobleck!

Washington D.C.
Our focus in Social Studies has been Our Nation's Capital. Students researched various monuments located in Washington D.C. during Reading, focusing on locating important details. Facts were then used by groups to create a poster about the monument, which were then presented to the class. The follow-up activity will be to write an expository piece in writing, highlighting three different monuments.
