In stem scopes science, students are investigating
the building blocks of matter
This week we learned that many types of matter are built from smaller pieces. Students worked cooperatively to assemble different parts to create a working flashlight. They explored how smaller pieces can be assembled in more than one way to create larger objects, building structures out of foam blocks. . The final challenge was to build a structure using marshmallows and toothpicks. Students had to plan, build, test, and refine their design. The structures were judged using the following criteria and constraints:
- Groups must draw a plan for their structure before building it.
- The tower must be 30 cm tall.
- The tower must stand on its own for at least 15 seconds.
- You may only use the provided materials.
As you can see, we have many creative engineers in Second grade!
