STEM SHOWCASE

Members of the Somerset Berkley Education Foundation and the other second grade classes were invited to come see all the amazing things constucted by the students. All the materials are part of our STEM bins, which were made possible by grant money given by the SBEF.

A Literary Feast!

The class enjoyed a "book tasting" set up by Ms. Donovan. A "book tasting" is a fun, interactive event where students get to sample a variety of books from different genres and authors, encouraging them to explore new reading interests and discover potential favorites.
MATERIAL MAGIC
Continuing the study of materials and their properties.

Students examine how large structures like houses are built from smaller pieces. In the activity, Paper Towers, they design their own structures using an unconventional building material: paper! Students build towers using 3" x 5" index cards and paper clips. First, they build tall towers, then they are challenged to build towers strong enough to support a hardcover book.

Celebrating the 100th Day of School !

Using their engineering skills, students worked cooperatively to make creations out of 100 things.

MATERIAL MAGIC
In this unit, students explore the properties of materials and matter! They describe and classify different types of materials by properties like hardness, flexibility, and absorbency, and they investigate how those properties are useful in meeting basic human needs (such as clothing and cooking). They also investigate how heating and cooling affect the properties of materials.

Creating hats that have the properties of water resistance, absorbancy, stiffness and flexibility to provide shade.

Testing whether materials are insulators or conductors

Feeling Festive

Students wrote descriptive sentences to try to stump their classmates.

It's been a fun fall!

Partner spelling to practice for the quiz

In this activity, Cornmeal Canyons, students created a model landform using cornmeal. Then they dripped water over this “land” to observe how water can change its shape and to understand how, over long periods of time, canyons can be formed through a similar process.

In the activity, Erosion Engineering, they designed and tested ways to keep water from washing away a hill modeled out of cornmeal.
