BOOK CLUBS
During Reader's Workshop, BOOK CLUBS meet daily. Each group is reading a different novel. Each day they read a chapter or two and respond to the reading. Responses include identifying story elements, summarizing events, making text-to-text connections, text-to-self connections, word work, poetry, and illustrating. Upon completion, students must give an oral summary of the book, including how the problem in the story was resolved and whether they would recommend this book to their classmates or not. Some of the books that have been read include: Dear Mr. Henshaw, Strider, Bunnicula, Hatchet, A Taste of Blackberries, Bridge to Terabithia, The Girl With 500 Middle Names, and Skinnybones.

**CREATIVE SCIENCE**
CREATING THE PHASES OF THE MOON USING OREOS
Studying soil in the outdoor classroom
The future geologists in 4-V have been studying Rocks and Minerals. We spent time learning what characteristics scientists use to classify rocks as either Igneous, Metamorphic, or Sedimentary. Also, how scientists use the 3 properties, color, hardness, and luster to identify minerals.
Students "traveled" to the southwest region and enjoyed learning about many different people, places , and things!
Weather experts and future meteorologists~the future looks bright!!
Everyone enjoyed the cereal box book reports that were interesting and entertaining !
It was a pleasure to have Mr. Raposo come in to share all his weather instruments. he works for a company that manufactures all different types of meteorological measuring tools including anemometers, barometers, wind vanes, rain gauges and thermometers. the class learned how they are made and how they work.

STUDYING MATTER
Investigating Force and Motion~ Students observed the result of applying force on an object, and how friction, gravity, mass, and inertia effect motion.

After reading and research, experts reported on how simple machines are used in construction, health, sports, and the home.
Using a jack-0-lantern and some mystery matter, students were able to see a demonstration of chemical change. The carved pumpkin was an example of a physical change and the combination of some common household items created an exciting chemical change.
Our class will be getting together once a month with Mrs. Hedly's first grade. This month we got together to make Halloween frames. Fourth graders helped their partners write about the activity.
MEASURING MASS
Making guesses and testing theories, students learned that
different objects have different weights (mass), and looks can be deceiving.
Even though a marble and cotton ball are the same size, they have a dramatically
different mass.

LITERACY CENTERS Students work together during Literacy Centers. One activity is Read to Each other, which improves oral fluency. Word Work increases comprehension and use of rich language. Spelling practice, and grammar centers focus on a specific skill. Students have an opportunity to use the laptop computers, and will soon be learning how to use Google Docs. |
