Students used a variety of materials to design a protective covering for a plant that couldn't be exposed to direct sunlight. Their designs had to be engineered in a way to meet very specific criteria~The protective covering could not be any bigger than 30cm by 30cm, it had to allow some sunlight in, and allow the plant to get water. The results were amazing , unique, and creative!

SLOW CHANGES TO LAND
We make observations to learn more about Earth each day. Earth looks different now than how it looked 50 years ago. We can observe changes to different landforms by carefully recording data over time.
Students use chalk as a model of how land changes slowly.
Pouring water over a sugar mountain simulates the effects of rain and river flow on the mountain. Rubbing sandpaper on the sugar mountain simulates the effect of wind on the rock.
As we dive into our new Science Curriculum, we begin with Earth Science. Our first investigation was about Quick Changes to Land. Together we created model volcanoes to observe how changes on Earth occur, and how land can expand, grow, and change quickly.

Literacy Centers
Students work together during Literacy Centers. One activity is Listen to Reading which models oral fluency and allows students to practice reading comprehension by responding to reading . Word Work increases spelling and sight word vocabulary accuracy. In the Poetry center, students write about familiar poems, and make observations about patterns they see in poetry. Writing about reading is done in their Reading Journal. Writers have an opportunity to improve the skills they learn in the Empowering Writers program at the Writing Center.

Look for a behavior/homework calendar in the back of the red take home folder. Students who exceed classroom/school expectations will color the square purple. Students who follow school/class expectations will color the day green, it was a good day!! If the day is yellow, it was an o.k. day. The color red means it was a tough day and we need to work together to make things better. Please sign the calendar at the end of each week.
