Valentine Web of Friendship
Students demonstrated how they were 100 days smarter by using engineering ideas to work cooperatively and make a creation out of sets of 100 different building materials! Their S.T.E.M. creativity shined through!!

Students are becoming world travelers, complete with passports, as we visit each continent and countries located there. So far we have visited Mexico, Australia, and China. Students designed Pinatas and practiced writing their names in Chinese symbols.
Mystery Snowmen
The mystery snowmen were easy to guess thanks to students' great descriptive writing with elaborative detail.
We practiced saying Merry Christmas in different languages at Morning Meeting, including in German. We greeted Mrs. Fogg - Frohe Weihnachten!

The Building Blocks of Matter
This week we learned that matter has properties by investigating mystery balloons. We learned that many types of matter are built from smaller pieces. Students worked cooperatively to assemble different parts to create a working flashlight. They explored how smaller pieces can be assembled in more than one way to create larger objects, building structures out of foam blocks. . The final challenge was to build a structure using marshmallows and toothpicks. Students had to plan, build, test, and refine their design. The structures were judged using the following criteria and constraints:
Groups must draw a plan for their structure before building it.
As you can see, we have many creative engineers in Second grade!

- Use 50 marshmallows and 100 toothpicks.
- The tower must be 30 cm tall.
- The tower must stand on its own for at least 15 seconds.
- You may only use the provided materials.

Second Grade is One In a Minion!
Applying real life math skills during a
PUMPKIN INVESTIGATION
Pumpkins were measured using standard and non-standard measure, weighed , lines were counted , predictions were made about buoyancy, seed size and quantity, and of course, we scooped out the guts and carved a face!
Daily Literacy Center reinforce skills in all academic areas.

Below you will find a list of classroom supplies that your child will need for the upcoming 2018-2019 academic year.
Please send these items in with your child the first week of school.
2 Boxes of crayons
Sock (to use as a dry eraser)
2 Packages of #2 regular pencils
Pencil box
2 Highlighters (yellow)
2 Pink erasers
10 Large glue sticks
Pocket folders (1 each of red, yellow, green, blue, purple)
Wide ruled composition notebooks (3 marbled covered)
They will need “refreshing” throughout the school year.
Purchase extra while on sale this summer for mid-year replacement!
