GLOW DAY 2023
Author Visit
We were thrilled to have a virtual visit from author Mary Beth Stevens and her dog Tippy, the star of her book series.
Biodiversity and Engineering
Students investigated which kinds of birds are likely to visit a bird feeder based on what they eat. In the activity, Design a Bird Feeder, students first drew their own bird feeder design to attract a specific type of bird. Then they built a prototype of their bird feeder using available materials.

Making bird feeders for our furry and feathered friends.
Some matter is made of many materials working together. Students had to figure out how to assemble a flashlight correctly to make it work. As you can see, after a lot of trial and error, everyone was successful!
We continue to study the properties of matter. This week we investigated flexibility and buoyancy.
We started a unit on Matter in Science by learing about the 3 states of matter and properties. Our first investigation was a Cracker Lab!
Students practice reading fluency by performing Reader’s Theater. Due to many absences before Christmas break, they were unable to perform their plays for the other second grade classes. After all their hard work preparing,
they performed the Christmas themed plays for each other when we got back.

MYSTERY SCIENCE~CORNMEAL CANYONS
In this lesson, students make hypotheses and investigate the causes of canyons and create a model landform using cornmeal. Then they drip water over this “land” to observe how water can change its shape and to understand how, over long periods of time, canyons can be formed through a similar process.
